Is That XM In Your Pocket Or Are You Just Happy To See Me?

{mosgoogle}The complete bundle includes nearly 20 more components - two antennas, three mounting kits, two power packs and a remote. Delphi tossed in everything but the kitchen sink! As the first portable satellite receiver, Delphi did a surprisingly good job with the MyFi. The unit is smaller than one would imagine for a first generation product (I remember how big the first Sony Walkman was). While it's not super small like the latest breed of MP3 players but it won't weigh you down either.

When you hear a song you like, you can press a button marked 2go and the unit begins recording until you either turn it off or the 5 hour recording buffer fills up. The MyFi splits music streams automatically, so each song can be located by name. However, the recording feature doesn't capture back to the start of the song. The 128MB of integrated memory does not buffer the music stream, so if you hear a song you really want to save, you're going to miss the first 10 seconds or so.

Reception quality is fine when used outside but tend breaks up indoors unless you're near a window or on the top floor of a building. This is where the record feature comes in handy - when reception goes bad, listen to the recorded tracks. The unit does include an external antenna for those times when reception quality isn't optimal.

Battery life clocked in at just a bit over 5 hours in satellite receiver mode, which is pretty good for a first generation product. You can extend the life by turning off the receiver during time when you're in playback mode. In daily use, the MyFi was fine for carrying while walking or jogging, and the unit could easily be placed on the dash or on the console of a car - mounts for both are included.

Overall, the MyFi is a really nice product and anyone who is into satellite radio will want to take a look at it. This is the first truly portable, battery powered, self contained satellite receiver and it's far more versatile than any other satellite receiver introduced to date. The MyFi isn't perfect - it cuts off the start of songs you decide to record off the air and it has poor reception indoors if you aren't near a window.
